São Ruy - The last days

She was a ship that makes me remember many things, principaly when I was her chiefmate in the years nineteenth seventy five/seventy six. Later on I become  harbour pilot in Viana do Castelo and I found again São Ruy. Many times I manouvre this ship on entrance coming from Newfoundland with cod fish or sailing to Newfoundland to catch them.

It was built in Lisbon on the CUF shipyard's to the owner Empresa de Pesca de Viana in the year 1939 Her main characteristics was:

Length over all - 66,82 mts.

Breath - 10,99 mts.

Gross tonnage - 1.043 tons.

Net tonnage - 448 tons.

Maximum draught - 20' 00'' feet.

Along her long life it was used on the fishing of cod (bacalao) by the method of long-line with the fishermen in small boats named "dóris"; one in each boat during the day. It's a very hard life, that the portuguese White fleet (as it was knowned in St. John's of Newfoundland) practised for many, many years until 1974.The last 15 years of her life she practised the method of fishing by using nets.

In 1987 the owner change the name to "LEONE II" flag Sierra Leone, and in 26 September 1988 she enter directly in the New Harbour of Viana do Castelo for the last time. After that she moved pear to pear until it was unrigged like the fotos show and moved for the last place.

 

 

It was very painful to assist  the unrigging of a ship that takes part of our life, principaly if you haven't other way to go to your service as in this case. All days I see the ship loose one part of them, it was like I loose one part of me.

 

 

The ship where you have passed days and days of your life, good and bad moments, is been distroied for ever, ever...

One day, when the most part was unrigged, it rest simply the bottom, I received a call to remove, once more, the rest of the ship to the "cemetery". It's my destiny, I can't refuse. It's my job. I desired don't be in service this day, but it's impossible, because the other pilot leave the service that morning and is going home far away from here.

 

 

 

The tugboats  "Moraes" and " Balançuela" was in position to pickup the tows to towing the rests of "ex.São Ruy" or "Leone II" to the cemetery. There wasn't conditions to be on board but in this case I prefer this situation. I stay on the pilot boat and gave orders to the tugs start towing.

 

 

When the rests of the ship passed on the lock I remember the dificulties and the anxiety before manouevre. It wasn't a very manoubrable ship and I taken many frights during the almost seven years I manouvred this vessel.

 

 

 

This time also the manouevre is becoming dificult for the tugboats because the thin forms of the keel don't permit make a steady course. Other wise, it seems the vessel don't want go to the last place of her life.

A ship is like us, she has soul, she cry when is necessary cry, when she loose or died a sailor, she smile when she catch a lot of fish and make the trip short or when everything is OK on board, she soulk when the sort don't help, but she is amazing and kind when the weather is extremely good.

 

 

 

For the rest of her life she go into a beach, may be a good place to rest if we see beatiful mermaids. I think São Ruy merit to be surrounded with a lot of themselves.

But one thing I supose it should be done when the authorities decided to gave a name at this beach. The name of this beach should be "SÂO RUY BEACH" and not " Coral beach", because the first ship that discovered the sand of this beach was "SÂO RUY", and she was a portuguese  not a chinese ship.
