Those pictures are the most eficient way to demonstrate how intense are the efect of the sea power on the land structures.

On this place eleven years ago took place a big accident with a ship doble than that we see on the picture down.

On this picture we can see a rock estimated in above three tons, it's a toy on the ridge of the waves.

This morning the wheather was very cloudy and it wasn't amazing to be on the beach so...

...the little boys and girls, between ten and twelve years old, whith their teachers

decided clean the beach. It's an important and salutary help that dignify the school

where they belong.

MOTARDS ON THE BEACH

The last Saturday at 10:00 the Coral Beach was full of MOTARDS. It was a beautifull spectacle because the motos were very well disposed along the place. Another thing that I took place was the order manner as they live together.

Most of them was followed by their wife and when they depart don't make so much noise, like others I have seen before.

Congratulations and good voyages like that.

Shipyard is full of ships. Repairs and new buildings. It seems that everything is rolling well. Should be, but we know there are some problems, principaly because of "Atlântida".

We hope the two parts envolved come to terms in order of the interests of both parts.

The gouvernement of Portugal and Azores have one word to said to raise the blockade of looking forward to the future of the Vianayard and the transport between Azores Islands.

Today, when I finish my jogging alongside the western breakwater,I seat down for a while outside of the Koral Beach Bar on the esplanade taking a coffee and I saw a lot of little children preaparing for cleaning the beach.

This action protected by the autarchy is worthy of praise, because is on the young ages that we can start built a new world.

I know that the autharcy had planned other actions in way to protected the environmemt during this summer in different places. I hope the future will be better for this children that today learning how to built a better world.

As soon as I open the car door I saw the bulk of an unknown thing over the sand. I aproach and I saw the aspect shoun on the pictures below.

BALDUR - THE FIRST SHIP

The New Harbour of Viana do Castelo was officially openned in 26 April 1984. The fisrst comercial ship entered in 21 April 1984 and her name is "BALDUR".

LADY LAURA / COMANDANTE ÁGUAS

Two names for the same vessel - the tugboat operating actually in the harbour of Viana do Castelo CMTE ÁGUAS, before 1988 was called LADY LAURA and is based in the English harbour of Hull.

In Octouber of 1988 I was invited by the manager of the company of tugboats operating in Viana do Castelo harbour, Mr. Santos, to see two tugboats in Hull. This tugboats was exposed to sale and he pretended the opinion of an expert to make a decision. In her mind I was the person indicated to gave this opinion because of my job and my experience in the matter.

For my side is a dificult position, because my situation as chief-pilot, placed myself engaged with the analysis I made about the tug. In other view is important for the harbour and for the pilotage choose a tug fitted to the characteristiques and needs specyfics of the harbour.

The harbour needs urgently a tug boat to help in the manouvres and can't be all time depending of the disponibility of the tugs from the neighbour harbours of Vigo and Leixões. This fact had a great importance in order to accept de invitation of Mr. Santos to go to England.

Ro-Ro "Seafowl"

We have the gift of the master of the RO-RO "SEAFOWL", captain Bonneron, a sympathique French.

The ship "Seafowl" made a regular line Poole - Viana - Lisboa, since May 1988 and it's an important help for our trip to England because we hadn't flight to go in the next days but we had to return.

MARITIME ROUTE "WAY TO SANTIAGO"

Last sunday arrived to Marina Viana harbour two sailing boats proceeding from the port of Póvoa de Varzim, integrated in a maritime route that started in Figueira da Foz and will be finished in Vila Garcia de Arosa.

This route is one of the "way to Santiago", not yet explored, and in this first time included two sailing vessels - NAUJA and ZORBA.

It was about 09:30 and I'm at the end of the North breakwater, making my matinal jogging and I don't resist at this spectacular view.

Was a small boat used in hidrographic operations in and out of the Portuguese harbours entrances.

Normaly she was based in Viana harbour astricted to the 1st. Hidrographic Brigade but when is necessary she went out to other harbours included on this service.

I knew very well the people that work there on the last two decades of the last century, principaly the master of TABU José Rocha.

I show this pictures here to pay homage to this man that spend the most part of her life manouvering small boats like this. This is one of them who he dedicated her enthusiasm, knowledge and affection.

She was deposited over the pear, near the berthing place, waiting for the unriging to scrap, under the view of Santa Luzia mountain.

FUNCHAL

The first cruise liner in Viana harbour was "FUNCHAL" by the command of José Amadeu Albuquerque, a friend that had been Chiefmate and Captain of diferent trawlers in Viana's Fishing Company.

The harbour pilot designated to manouvre the ship on entrance was Bastião. The tug-boats used to help the manouvre of the ship was, ahead "Vandoma" and astern " Cte. Águas".

Plenty people on the pear observe the beatiful ship. It's "Ship's Day"!!!

I was there and took this pictures for the history of Viana harbour.

THE FLYING BOATS...

On the last years of the eighty decade Viana harbour was invaded by a fleet of rapid launches that we called them flying boats ", because they surf on the water like a hydro-aeroplane planning over the water .

They had a engine power of normally six motors about 1200 BHP to 1500 BHP , so they had a very high speed that permit, in a few seconds, go from the old pilot station to the end of the north breakwater .

Stern of them grow up a water-jet occulting the launches. It's impressing see and hear the performance of that spectacle .

The immense quantity of gasoline and oil they spend, it 's also impressing and incredible .

One night , a lot of them , I don't remember yet the exactly number of them enter in fire and destroyed .

Someone said that it was a retaliation , but exactly nobody know 's what happen .

One thing we know , after that, stopped the strange movement of "flying boats " coming in and out during the night time .

One of them, damaged by the fire ,was arrested by the authorities and stay a long time over the quay, on the north-west corner of commercial dock as we can see on the picture below for the posterity.

SHIP'S SCRAP...

Between September 1990 and December 1992, about ten ships where reformed on Vianayard's.

Normaly the forward part is cutted out and replaced by a new one larger. The part cutted out go to scrap towed by a tug boat, generaly to a scrapper in Lisbon - Alhos Vedros, where she was unriged.

At the end of eighty decade, Empresa de Pesca de Viana had 13 ships. Is the highest period of this factory fishing along her history. In the begining of the ninety decade she started to decline and the ships goes to scrap.

Excepting two ships, Praia de Santa Cruz and Ilha Graciosa, the other vessels of Empresa de Pesca de Viana where transformed in scrap. Most of all unriged in Comercial Dock excluding Leone IV - Ex. Senhora do Mar and Monte de Santa Luzia, that goes to Gijon towed by the tug boat "Facal 14" in 30 April 1994.

The classic trawler "Senhor dos Mareantes", Vianayard's building nº 1 , that we can see on the foto below, landed on south side of Comercial Dock, waiting for her unlucky end after 44 years at sea, most of all on the seas of Newfoundland and Groenland catching the cod fish and salting him until received a great transformation between 1977/1980. She was adapted to freeze the fish using modern processes.

After that all the fish catched is processed frozen, it means that the trip is shorter and she made more trips in a year and more money for the owner and for the crew.

The same sort had the coastal fisher boats made in wood was unriged by an European Comunity Agreement. The fisher owners received a compensation to unrig her vessels.

The scrap had no interest because all of them is wood whithout any comercial value, excluding the motor, the winches and few parts in iron.

Rio Lima versus Leone III

Rio Lima was a ship built in 1952 on the shipyard of Viana do Castelo as a motor ship destinated to the fishing with long-line in the banks of Newfoundland. Later in 1962 it was transformed and adapted to a fishing-vessel prepared to catch cod fish by two methods: - fishing-nets and trawling-nets(seine nets).

Leone III - Ex. Rio Lima landed in Comercial Dock of Viana Harbour

Net tonnage : 638 Tons

Length over all : 67,12 mts

Breath: 11,06 mts

Engine Power : 1261 BHP - 275 RPM

In 1988 she change the name to Leone III with Panamá flag until 1995.

During her long life she cross the seas of Newfoundland, Groenland, Norway, Sierra Leone and South Africa using diferent arts of fishing for catch diferent kinds of fishing.

I remember one trip she made to the seas of Sierra Leone(1988?), comanded by Captain João Amorim Carvalho, with about 500 tons of special and gross fish, catched on the virgin shoals of Sierra Leone.

On the last trip she made in Norway, she towed the other trawler named "Leone", ex." Santa Maria Madalena" that had an accident with fire on board, from Norway to Viana do Castelo.

After that she was transformed into scrap.

São Ruy - The last days

She was a ship that makes me remember many things, principaly when I was her chiefmate in the years nineteenth seventy five/seventy six. Later on I become harbour pilot in Viana do Castelo and I found again São Ruy. Many times I manouvre this ship on entrance coming from Newfoundland with cod fish or sailing to Newfoundland to catch them.

It was built in Lisbon on the CUF shipyard's to the owner Empresa de Pesca de Viana in the year 1939 Her main characteristics was:

Length over all - 66,82 mts.

Breath - 10,99 mts.

Gross tonnage - 1.043 tons.

Net tonnage - 448 tons.

Maximum draught - 20' 00'' feet.

Along her long life it was used on the fishing of cod (bacalao) by the method of long-line with the fishermen in small boats named "dóris"; one in each boat during the day. It's a very hard life, that the portuguese White fleet (as it was knowned in St. John's of Newfoundland) practised for many, many years until 1974.The last 15 years of her life she practised the method of fishing by using nets.

In 1987 the owner change the name to "LEONE II" flag Sierra Leone, and in 26 September 1988 she enter directly in the New Harbour of Viana do Castelo for the last time. After that she moved pear to pear until it was unrigged like the fotos show and moved for the last place.

It was very painful to assist the unrigging of a ship that takes part of our life, principaly if you haven't other way to go to your service as in this case. All days I see the ship loose one part of them, it was like I loose one part of me.

The ship where you have passed days and days of your life, good and bad moments, is been distroied for ever, ever...

One day, when the most part was unrigged, it rest simply the bottom, I received a call to remove, once more, the rest of the ship to the "cemetery". It's my destiny, I can't refuse. It's my job. I desired don't be in service this day, but it's impossible, because the other pilot leave the service that morning and is going home far away from here.

The tugboats "Moraes" and " Balançuela" was in position to pickup the tows to towing the rests of "ex.São Ruy" or "Leone II" to the cemetery. There wasn't conditions to be on board but in this case I prefer this situation. I stay on the pilot boat and gave orders to the tugs start towing.

When the rests of the ship passed on the lock I remember the dificulties and the anxiety before manouevre. It wasn't a very manoubrable ship and I taken many frights during the almost seven years I manouvred this vessel.

This time also the manouevre is becoming dificult for the tugboats because the thin forms of the keel don't permit make a steady course. Other wise, it seems the vessel don't want go to the last place of her life.

A ship is like us, she has soul, she cry when is necessary cry, when she loose or died a sailor, she smile when she catch a lot of fish and make the trip short or when everything is OK on board, she soulk when the sort don't help, but she is amazing and kind when the weather is extremely good.

For the rest of her life she go into a beach, may be a good place to rest if we see beatiful mermaids. I think São Ruy merit to be surrounded with a lot of themselves.

But one thing I supose it should be done when the authorities decided to gave a name at this beach. The name of this beach should be "SÂO RUY BEACH" and not " Coral beach", because the first ship that discovered the sand of this beach was "SÂO RUY", and she was a portuguese not a chinese ship.

Rest in peace São Ruy!
